2025 Super Bowl Champions! Congratulations Philadelphia Eagles!

2023 & 2025 Super Bowl

In 2023, history was made when the Philadelphia Eagles' Jalen Hurts and Kansas City Chiefs Patrick Mahomes became the first two black Quarterbacks to start the Super Bowl. "To have two black quarterbacks start in the Super Bowl, I think it's special," Mahomes said. Hurts also remarked on the historic moment "I think it's something that's worthy of being noted and it is history." He noted that only seven African American quarterbacks had ever played in the Super Bowl. "To be the first for something is pretty cool, I know it will be a good one." That year, the Kansas City Chiefs went on to win the Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona with a 38-35 victory. This year, in 2025 it seems the Philadelphia Eagles wanted their 2023 rematch, and they got what they wanted. The Eagles demolished the Chiefs with a 40-22 win on Sunday in New Orleans at the Superdome. Quarterback Jalen Hurts threw two touchdowns and rushed for a third, while kicker Jake Elliot scored four field goals. With 21 passing yards, hurts led the team in 72 rushing yards, despite one interception. He earned a Super Bowl MVP Honors.

After the win, Hurts expressed that for him it's all about having experience and learning, "The good, the bad, all of it, using it as fuel to pursue my own greatness." He went on to show gratitude towards his teammates, saying he couldn't have done it without them.

Black Men in Higher positions

"They felt black men were inherently inferior that black quarterbacks in their minds, could not lead white players in the NFL and they just weren't smart enough." said Jason Reid, a sportswriter for ESPN and author of the book, "Rise of the Black Quarterback: What it means for Ameria." White players mainly Dominated those leadership positions, while black players were relegated to roles thought to be more physical than intellectual, like running back, cornerback, and wide receiver. "It was just understood that if you were a black quarterback in college, you were moving to another position (in the NFL). It really just came down to systemic racism" Reid told NPR's Morning Edition. For every "first black quarterback to ___ milestone." there is a story about how white coaches and owners underestimated a black man's abilities. Take Marlin Briscoe, the first black player in the Super Bowl era to start a game as quarterback. The Denver Broncos wanted to convert him to a cornerback but soon the team's white quarterback was injured, and the white backup played poorly, forcing the Broncos to give Briscoe a chance.

Black History

For the first time in NFL history, in 2023 and now in 2025, two Black Quarterbacks will take over the Super Bowl. The NFL was once entirely off limits to black players and began to integrate in earliest throughout the 1950s. Washington, the last team to desegregate, finally drafted its first black player in 1962. Yet, even as black players joined teams in growing numbers, the team owners and managers continued to discriminate against them, especially in so-called "thinking positions" like center, middle, linebacker, and quarterback.

Congratulations to the 2025 NFL Champions The Philadelphia Eagles!
